World Art Days are celebrated globally in homage to International Museum Day which was first observed in 1930 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The ICOM promoted International Museum Day to promote international cooperation in saving historic artifacts. In 1961, UNESCO adopted International Museum Day as a global celebration of museums and museums’ role in defending civilization. In 2018, UNESCO declared June 30th as World Art Day to promote appreciation of the arts worldwide. Many countries have already started celebrating World Art Day this year. Here are some examples of celebrations held worldwide recently:

In Australia, children in many primary schools performed creative dances or musical acts to celebrate World Art Day. These performances highlighted the importance of arts education for young people. Another celebration took place at Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia with performances by world-renowned musicians from different countries. Australian pianist Peter Scowen performed in honor of his homeland’s heritage sites that he had visited during his career. An Indonesian band also performed at this event as did students from China, Thailand and France’s French Alliance Institute for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (CAMFAR). Together, these performers showcased how appreciation for the arts fosters understanding among people from different countries.

World Art Days encourage people to appreciate the arts worldwide by showcasing local artistic traditions on these occasions. In India, cities celebrated Heritage Days— a national initiative to promote knowledge about Indian heritage sites across the country. To mark Heritage Days, people visited their local heritage sites and shared stories about their experiences there on World Heritage Days. Through this activity, people were able to learn more about their local history while celebrating their nation’s artistic traditions simultaneously— another example of promoting appreciation through celebrating different cultures worldwide.
